Introduction In basic terms, plastic surgery concerns itself with the enhancement or alteration of an individuals body using various surgical procedures. It can be noted that in recent times, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking plastic surgery. In this text, I concern myself with the primary causes of this growing trend. The Growing Popularity of Plastic Surgery: Possible Causes To begin with, it can be noted that peoples obsession with plastic surgery in recent times has largely been informed by the medias increased glorification of perfection and beauty. Indeed, according to Porterfield (2007), actors and entertainers set an unrealistic ideal body image that leads to many peoples dissatisfaction with their own perceived imperfections. Hence in their quest to look like their favorite stars as portrayed by the media, some people seek to alter or enhance their body features through plastic surgery. Secondly, recent advances in technology have effectively brought down the costs associated with plastic surgery. Indeed, plastic surgery is no longer a preserve of the rich. As Bosshart (2006) notes, the reconstruction of a single breast of a woman a couple of years ago went for an upwards of US $10,000. The same is now possible for a mere US $600 (Bosshart, 2006).
